This is because the word “should” nearly always implies that there is a disconnect between what we think ought to be happening and what actually is happening. People often say, for example, “Somebody should be doing this” or “They should consider my needs” and so on. When we are tied up in “should” we will generally be experiencing some combination of feeling frustrated, depressed, angry, resentful, victimised, outraged and helpless. These feelings can cause us to act impulsively, often alienating those around us and making things worse.

The second is to change things. That is, to take a careful look at what is going on, think about it, perhaps discuss it, and then begin to change the aspects of it that you have control over. The third is to accept it. Some of the things that happen to us in life just have to be adapted to. When you are in this situation, figure out what is important to you, what you truly value, and find a way to have what is important within the boundaries of your circumstances. The final choice is to do nothing.
