With its looming presence throughout Rodman’s story, gold has a solidity lacking in the Brendall’s magical world of commodities. And although it rests in the granite crevices of faraway California, it seems a far more real source of wealth than the mysterious unknown uncle. Still, the precious element cannot be embraced and cannot even be sought without reducing the Brendall home to fragments.
